Off the beaten track and set back from the wild and crazy energy of this city, sits “Transform NOLA,” a treehouse of a studio on Oak Street in Uptown where you drop your worries in the foyer as you step into its tranquil space. Over the past several months I have had the privilege of practicing yoga with its creator, Mia. I have grown stronger and longer, my endurance has increased and my practice deepened. My sessions with Mia have helped me manage the stress and uncertainty of life in todayʼs world. More than a yoga teacher, Mia is a certified fitness instructor and a life coach. She brings those aspects to her teaching and lives by the precept that by helping yourself you help others. I strive to live by the words that conclude each and every one of her sessions:

"May your mind think good thoughts.
May your mouth speak kind words.
May your heart be filled with love.
-- Helen H., New Orleans
My own personal journey in yoga began a year after my son was born. I knew that I needed to do something for myself, something that would help me calm my mind, something that would help me feel good about myself. I have found that, and more, with yoga. I am stronger, calmer, more flexibile and less reactive to things that Life throws my way. It has helped me become a better mother, daughter and friend.
I teach vinyasa yoga which is a flowing sequence of movements connected to the breath. The body is challenged in the areas of strength, balance and flexibility; the mind is challenged by focusing on the task at hand, the breath. With consistent practice, my students have realized amazing benefits -- they have overcome chronic pain, serious injuries and other Life challenges.

No matter what your situation, yoga can benefit you physically, mentally and emotionally. If you don't feel ready for a class in a group setting, I am always available for private sessions to get you comfortable with the poses and format. We can also work together to modify the practice for any injuries or temporary conditions -- pre-natal yoga is a great way to get ready for baby! The great thing about yoga is that you can start wherever you are and progress gradually from there...
Yoga is a continual learning process – and I can honestly say that I have barely scratched the surface. But, as a teacher, I commit to teaching my students what I know and guiding them in their process of personal growth in yoga. More thoughts and views about the studio and yoga in my interview with Yoga Lagniappe.
Note: I am a E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance and completed my 200-hour (2008) and 500-hour (2011) teacher training with internationally reknown yoga teacher and author, Rolf Gates. I completed training to offer Y12SR (Yoga & 12-Step Recovery) classes in New Orleans. My intention is to continue to learn and grow in the practice of yoga. Namaste! -- Mia
